Dealer parts prices
I just called around to get the price on a tail light bulb socket. One place is 20 dollars and the other is 15 dollars. I see them online from bmw dealership for 8 dollars. The reason I wouldnt order this part online is because its so inexpensive and by the time shipping is added it comes out to be the same or more. who sets the prices at these dealership? BMW or the owner of that dealership?

They need to pay for their overhead costs.
Dealership get their parts from BMW for wholesale price and put whatever mark-up they want to on it. You as a buyer have a choice though. For part <$50, I usually just get it from a local dealer. More than that, it would be online.

markup... the free enterprise is the keyword - the BMW AG sells the part to the dealers and then the dealers mark it up to what market will bear (or, will not bear) and sell it... some dealers are moving large amount of parts through their parts departments, by selling parts on wholesale accounts, to ECS or to Pelican or to other resellers, who sell aftermarket parts along with the OE parts, and they set up an online kiosk that automates the sales process for regular Joe Schmoe, and sell the parts at almost wholesale price to the regular guy...
There has always (as long as I know) been a 15% discount for over the counter sales for the BMW CCA members, so the online sales sometimes take it another 10% or so down... A dealer in NYC will be more expensive across the board than a dealer in Montana... In DC area, BMW of Alexandria is more expensive than BMW of Fairfax, and BMW of Sterling is more expensive than BMW of Alexandria... for the same things... go figure... But I always found nicer looking brand new car selection at the Sterling - I guess the dealers are not created equal... |

go to bmwcca.org, look for a local chapter...
or, come to the bimmerfest on july 20th in MD, and sign up there - they have a booth there... and we will have some grilling done there, like last year... very good experience... and a lot of NY/NJ folks are coming too... |

By "online dealer prices" I dont know exactly what you mean but I have 2 dealers near me that offer an easier solution. Buy online through your dealers website and pickup at their parts counter. Saved myself more than half cost from over the counter sales. And as was said in DMV parts prices can vary wildly just between a few zip codes and I am not a BMWCCA member. For example I bought 2 Vanos Solenoid seals at the parts counter, they were $15 each. Went to dealers website SAME EXACT PART was $6.40 each.

Thanks guys for info. Ill try to make it to bimmerfest.
As far as online dealer, some dealerships have exclusive online sales. The dealers in my area....hassle BMW and BMW of bayside don't seem to have sale online . It seems you can inquire online and that's it.
