You can check if it "warms" up then gets brighter and self levels (was that available for that year?) or turns on right away.. You can also see if there is a ballast behind the bulb housing somewhere?

You obviously never had hids before! They emit a whiter beam than halogen! What colour is your beam?
Remove the inside back cover and check the fitment of the light, easy,it will either have a traditional bulb fitment or a hid round 2 pin....
Unfortunately on your X5 ,both hid and halogen headlights look similar,if you had an earlier X5 ,the low beam has a projector lens, the halogen has not !

Did you forget to scroll down after hitting the search button?
No it's not a joke. I and others have used it.

Okay...I can't tell if you're joking or serious.

The VIN site is not a joke. You enter your VIN, then answer one SIMPLE math equation (correctly), then click the SEARCH button.
Hint to solve the math equation:
  • + (addition)
  • - (subtraction)
  • * (multiplication)
  • / (division)
Scroll down and you should see the specs & options that was installed on your BMW.

If you have xenon lights, you should see this option code listed:
  • S522A XENON-LICHT Xenon Light
