Alternator/voltage regulator question

Hi guys,

Is the voltage regulator part of the alternator?...as in if you buy an alternator, does it comes with a voltage regulator within the unit?

Also, If I want to tackle this job, any tips that might be helpful?

Regulator is a separate part

So you saying...if I want to change the alternator and voltage regulator, I would have to purchase both alternator and regulator ? I ask a BMW dealer and they say its a all in one unit.

My read on the realoem site is that it is a separate purchase. But, since it is attached to the alternator and it is recommended to replace the regulator at the same time it may be included in a new alternator--BMW should know. To compare prices the following may help:

I am planning on changing the alternator, but also the regulator as well. makes no sense to change the alternator and not the voltage regulator.

The regulator can be brought separately if the regulator is bad or if the brushes has worn to the point that the alternator is no longer charging the battery. A new alternator comes with a regulator already installed.
