Fitting aftermarket stereo in 02 non DSP

Hi Guys,

I have a 2002 X5 - non DSP stereo (the small standard one with the CD player above). Would the below item fit straight in once I remove the old one or will I incur issues? I don't want to mess with it if Im going to loose some funtionality... I tried the search function but it didnt help.

SHould be fairly straight forward to install.

Potential areas to consider:

1. You can probably put the GPS puck under the dash on top on the unit and it will work just fine.

2. Microphone will need to be added. There is one on the front of the unit, but will be rubbish. would recommend one in the correct position which doesn't look supplied, but easy enough to source.

I have a similar factory system on my 2002 X5. Tips & suggestions:

1) Do you have a six or ten speaker system? Easiest way to ID this: do you have rear door small tweeters (part of the ten speaker system). If you're still not sure, please post the last 7 digits of your VIN - then it's easy to get from the factory build list.

2) Do you have any supplemental CD players, amps, etc. in the rear storage of the car (normally on the left side if this is the case)?

3) Do you have steering wheel controls for your head unit? Do you wish that they still provide these features (up/down & volume control)?

4) What would you like to achieve with an upgrade?

I ended up buying the Dynavin head unit for a grand, I have the 6 speaker system, no amp or cd multichanger in the boot. Once I have the Dynvain installed I'd like to add an amp plus a sub with another amp.. My stereo sound currently is poop!

My factory system could be better, and the path to upgrade from 6 to 10 speaker (BMW includes an amp in the back) involves adding under carpet wiring, front & rear door tweeters, etc.

I upgrade my BMW's to add factory options or similar, so know what & how. My X5 has received PDC, multifunction wheel, rear seat foot well lights, glovebox flashlight socket, etc. Moving from 6 to 10 is a BIG hassle.

I would first recommend you install (I used Dynamat) sound deadening tar / similar in your doors. Makes a better sound when you close them and it makes the car quieter - hence makes your system more effective. Removing door panels is quite easy, figure 30 minutes per door for the upgrade.
