troubleshooting sliding sunroof

My 2002 X5 is equipped with the sliding sunroof and NOT the panoramic sunroof. Lots of reading on the pano sunroof, but info on the sliding sunroof is scarce. Electrically it will retract halfway and stop. It will not return to the closed position, let alone tilt the sunroof open. Using the manual crank I can open and close the sunroof. What's involved in getting it fully operational once again?

i wonder if the reset procedure will work on the standard roof - press the roof button as to vent and hold it for 75 seconds... the roof is supposed to cycle through all of its positions...

let us know if it works...
