2001 X5 4.4i-new to me & questions

New to this site and to this used 2001 X5. Overall decent shape but have a few questions. The PO threw in a pair of new HID with Halo headlights. Would I need to simply fool the system with 4 ballasts & 4 -50 watt resistors or is there an easier way to use the new style headlights? Using them is not a top priority-doing all the maintenance that has perhaps been ignored will be job one. The engine had a fair bit of noise from the VANOS, the dealer talked me down on it saying it has been their experience it is mainly solenoid issues. I purchased the car and before the one hour hiway drive home, I put a part can of Seafoam in- all was quiet from the engine by the time I got home. I will proceed to change oil and check all levels-including the auto. I would ask another question- can someone recommend an OBD software bundle pertinent to my BMW- I would be interested in something at the hobbyist level-this is not a new career move for me. Appreciate any and all help- thank you.

Welcome to the site and congrats on picking up your E53.

For the future, please place the type of vehicle you have in your sig, such as I have. It makes it easier to identify what we are working with when trying to help you.

So how many miles are on her? As for lighting, I will let one of the experts chime in on that, but you said it wasn't important. As far as maintenance, do you know how many owners it had? What work was done to it in it's history? Many will probably say, depending on mileage and age to do a full cooling system overhaul. Water pump, rad, coolant res, hoses, etc.

As far as software, do a search on this forum and there are plenty of articles pertaining to your question about software and diag equipment.

Oh, pictures... Pictures would help. We always like to see some E53 porn. Haha tools luck with her and I hope we can all help you in the future.

I have used Carsoft 6.5 in the past with my E34, and E53, but with the newer computers because they don't have a serial port I have gone over to BMW Scanner 1.4. The software is free to download and the cable can be had for under $50.00.
