Transmission Rebuilding ZF 5HP24 (advice need it)

Hello to everyone,

I took my tranny down from the 2003 x5 4.6is, due to jolt 1-2 gears when hot!, and i am about to order the rebuild kit for it,i contacted Ctsc,but for some reason they do not reply yet!, i asked them if this was the right rebuild kit for my tranny:

Overhaul Kit 5HP24,

Tranny numbers:
1058-000034
Green sticker
5HP24

I do have 1 place that sells those kits here in town ,but little pricey!
$280 for a kit - retail or 230$ shop price, they also said that they do other kit for it that include some busing for $420 retail ,and $355 shop price.

now, at ctsc website it say $154 for the kit, just a little confuse witch set is what i need to order,if any can clarify that!?


Also , i see some people talking about a manual,is that the zf 5hp24 repair manual? the pdf? or there is other one that you can buy?

I would just get the seal & gasket set (ZF No. 1058 298 022) initially. It’s pointless spending money on clutch plates that you don’t need

You should really change the three steel pipes too.

Thank you so much for your time by replying to my tread, i know that you are the person that knows a lot about this zf tranny's!

So, i guess the link above was right, now are those pipes inside the tranny? sorry my first time, will also read manual and order all this today!, i have look at all parts that ctsc has under the 5hp24 and dont see any pipes,but will look more.

Now,are there any specialty tools required to do this? , i see some round tools and that dial gauge, never used a dial gauge before ,is there a guide how to do it so i under stand it? and how is done,well hope i learn some from this process !

Other question,

A.The torque converter if i put with face down in some to drain the oil,that should be fine? i mean so some of the old oil to come out...

B.Other one as for the overdrive rear box that needs to come out also? to do the work on the tranny?

C.Will you start tear down with valve body first or the internal part from the TC side?


I am reading in all forums about this ,lots of post and is really nice by the people that have done this so others can guide them selfs.

I guess those pipes are on page 52 in repair manual ,now need to see what part numbers they are .

The 5HP24 is a very easy transmission to strip and rebuild. When forum members post up issues with TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG being activated, just when warm, and the transmission jolting into 5th gear (as the A-clutch is leaking) but then all working fine again when cold, it’s extremely likely to be the ‘bearing then seal’ failure. Around 80% of the 5HP24s that I rebuild have exactly this problem so I certainly encourage people to strip & rebuild their own transmission because this fault is easy to see and fix.

However, I don’t believe that this is the issue you’re having. With the greatest respect, it sounds to me like you’re opening up an automatic transmission for your first time with no idea what you’re looking for. I hope I’m wrong but there’s a strong possibility that you will get it apart and still be none the wiser what’s wrong with it as you don’t know what all the components normally look like. Are you sure this is the right thing to do?

I dust did mine - but had a pro rebuild.
I would do a couple things while shes out

Rear Main Seal
Gasket on the Rear Block
Some other things like Output/Input Shaft Seal

AFAIK, and I'm not sure if Phil does this, but I thought it was common to replace the A drum with the updated design during the rebuild ?

yes,i think that a good idea for the rear main seal , but i did not have any engine oil links in between the tranny and engine!,

but i think i did see some at top under the heads ,in top of the tranny ,there is some water passage there and so some little oil there ,i will have a closer look on that.

I have worked on engines , and only one time i did some to a tranny with a friend, but that was 1 time and about 13 years ago, right now is a core,not good anyway, so hopefully will manage to fix it ,i know few things ,but not as an expert!, will try to read the repair manual,look at treads in forum ,ask questions and learn! ,the only think is at those specs ,need to pay attention and how to do it right.


I am willing to take a chance in learning and then helping others. Hope it works.

Found the part numbers for those tubes,in the spare pdf book,

1058 301 020
1058 301 021
1058 301 071

Now just need to find out where to get them ,as at ctsc did not see them,and if any tools are need it to pull them out.
