Oil filter housing Gasket and What I learned
Changed the oil filter housing gasket this weekend. I learned a few things;
after 163,000 plus miles the gasket becomes rock hard disconnect the banjo bolt for the oil feed line to the Vanos, on the side of the Vanos unit not the one on the the back of OFH. Less opportunity to cross thread or drop a washer. Remove the 4 bolts on the power steering pump and it will slide out of the way. Excellent opportunity to check the bearings in idler pulleys. If not changing the oil at least; install a new filter, easy $8.00 investment. Over all not a hard task just takes some time and patience. total just under 5 1/2 hours total time.

If you used a heat gun or hair dryer to heat the rubber gasket, it will soften the gasket and allow the gasket to be removed as one piece instead of a bunch of little pieces that break off.
