So long, and thanks for all the fish

Well the time finally came to put the X5 out to pasture. Maintenance and fuel costs finally got the better of me, and the decision was made to upgrade to something newer and cheaper to run.

The X5 was up to 240,000km and 13 years old. It did me well, and was a very capable and enjoyable car.

I have traded it on a 2006 E83 X3 3.0sd.

Only the twin turbo diesel seemed an appropriate replacement for the V8 :-)

The specs tell the story:
2000 X5 4.4i = 210kw, 440nm
2006 X3 3.0sd = 210kw, 580nm

X3 is not as nice to look at as the X5, and doesn't have as many gadgets, but it handles well, has massive power and uses 8.5L/100km rather than 13L/100km. And with diesel being 35% cheaper than petrol here in NZ, that equates to a massive saving at the pump.

Thanks for all the help over the years, I'll still be hanging around XOutpost, albeit now on the E83 forums :-)

It makes sense with those diesel fuel prices. Here in Canada diesel is more expensive then gazoline.

and to think, I switched over to my 01 x5 3.0 from a newer 06 f150 lariat to get better gas mileage haha.

so far I'm averaging 4~5mpg better and can still tow all the things I bought the f150 for.

I bet the diesel does get better mileage though. gas/diesel is same price here in south carolina but unloaded diesels do get better mileage pound for pound.

I'm pretty sure BMW New Zealand actually sell more diesel models than petrol, especially in the X series, as petrol here costs $2.30 per litre and diesel only costs $1.52 per litre (plus an additional road user charge of $0.05 per km on diesel vehicles)

Thats $US4.50 per gallon for diesel, and $US6.80 per gallon for 96 octane petrol.

The diesel models also have significantly better fuel economy.

So long and thanks for all the fish
So sad that it should come to this
We tried to warn you all but oh dear?

You may not share our intellect
Which might explain your disrespect
For all the natural wonders that
grow around you

So long, so long and thanks
for all the fish

The world's about to be destroyed
There's no point getting all annoyed
Lie back and let the planet dissolve(around you)

Despite those nets of tuna fleets
We thought that most of you were sweet
Especially tiny tots and your
pregnant women

So long, so long, so long, so long, so long
So long, so long, so long, so long, so long

So long, so long and thanks
for all the fish

If I had just one last wish
I would like a tasty fish
If we could just change one thing
We would all learn how to sing

Come one and all
Man and Mammal
Side by Side in life's great gene pool

(oooohhh oooohhh oooaahhhhh- ah ahh)

So long, so long, so long, so long, so long
So long, so long, so long, so long, so long

So long, so long and, thanks!
for all the fish!

In the UK diesel outsells Petrol in most makes and models now including the x5 and x3, although Diesel here is more expensive than petrol...
