Does the business radio use an amplified antenna?
I am trying to use an inline FM modulator to playback external audio sources through the radio. I found a couple, but one of them made mention of not being compatible with radios which use an amplified antenna and it said that BMWs are notorious for that... So, does anyone know if the business radio on the 2001 X5 3.0 (non-Nav) use an amplified antenna? Thanks... |

Yes, it does. There are FM modulators that will work with amplified antennas as long as you purchase the correct antenna adaptors.

The antenna amplifier is in the rear of the car behind the cargo panels. The antenna itself is embedded into the rear glass.

Thanks for the reply CharlieHustleX5.
FWIW, I bought an adapter that essentially converts the business radio's CD changer port into an auxiliary audio port. The adapter also offers the ability to control an Ipod/Iphone from the steering wheel controls (just as if it were a CD changer), but in order to do that, you have to purchase a $25 ipod cable (12 ft or so). However, since I don't have an IPOD I did not get that cable. Anyway, the audio port works very well and the audio quality is excellent. I paid $65 for it. I bought mine from GROM USB and iPod integration homepage, it was called "BMW / Mini Auxiliary interface / AUX input converter", item id: BMWA. |

Is there a solution for DSP radios?

USASpec and SoundGate both make AUX adapters for BMW DSP sound systems. They are a bit pricey ($150-$220), but they work without any compromise. I know there are a few other companies that produce something like this, but those are the 2 that come off the top of my head.

I just replace my Business CD radio with an aftermarket one, and I have no FM signal. My installation kit from Crutchfield did include the proper adapter so that I could plug the antenna wire into the radio.
Could it be that this is the FM antenna amplifier and I need to plug it back in? ![]() I pulled it along with the DSP amp when I tore out everything related to the oem radio. EDIT, did some Google searches, and the above module appears to be for the Voice Control functionality, some sort of communications control module. I guess I'll plug it back in just to see if that does the trick, but it probably won't. Anyone else had issues going from the Business CD DSP radio to aftermarket and loosing FM reception?
