Satnav spinning in back ground when not used

This might be dump question...

My satnav seems to be running even if I don't use it. Reason I am saying is, on split screen even if I use radio or CD half of the screen display street name etc.
So it means satnav is running behind.

Is there anyway we can switch off satnav.

1. Turning off monitor does this turn off satnav?
2. Is there anyway we can program not to start satnav until we explicitly switch on.
