Transfer Case Chain Loose

I'm pretty certain my transfer case chain is stretched and needs to be replaced. I'm wondering if I can just do like I did my Jeep Grand Cherokee and disconnect the front drive shaft and call it good for now.

Is that possible?

Okay, would it work if I just removed the front drive shaft and left the axles alone?

The only problem I see happening in the future is the DSC seeing your front wheels without spinning in a mud or snow.
Otherwise,as far as I know, there are no other means the system is gonna know about missing components, just your ABS sensors.
But,why don't you replace your chain?
It's a doable DIY and parts aren't that pricey. If you were able to do the timing chain guides,then...come on

The computers don't like it when you remove the front axle. You'll go into limp mode.

Yeah I'm just lazy. I already have the chain in fact. Plus I'm curious if my gas mileage would improve.

That's a good point.
My chain is stretched too and it makes some noise when I go from D to R or release the gas pedal while rolling. It was like that for at least two years now.
I don't know when I am gonna be able to get that fixed.Maybe next summer.

Well I tried taking the front drive shaft off and voila!! It Doesn't Move At All ha ha!

So I put that bad boy back on and added some more fluid into the transfer case so I'd feel like I accomplished something. I'm gonna wait until it isn't 90 degrees outside before I tackle the whole job.

I spent a day trying before I finally got a left axle out.Its outer boot started some deep cracks.I was pretty optimistic about doing all the boots at the same time I am replacing the ball joints and some bushings, but now I am stuck and can't get thrust arm's ball joint removed. It's rust"welded" into the hub.
I am gonna think twice before I plan another suspension related project

sethhatfield - you don't mention what year and version of transfer case you have. When you change the chain, refill with Redline MTL (if you have the NV125) and install a magnetic drain plug (BMW didn't install them but you can get the OEM magnetic version from Automatic, Standard Transmission and Transfer Case Rebuild Kits, Cobra Transmission Parts 1-800-293-1848, Cobra Transmission. You can go "whole hog" and buy two for the fill AND drain plug, which is what I did.
