Cracked instrument cluster cover - can it be replaced??

Hi all,

very weird damage occurred - the Perspex cover to the instrument panel has a crack which started at the bottom in exactly the centre of the 'lens'', and has worked its way slowly up the glass - you can't hardly see it from straight ahead but from the side it looks awful!
I went to the parts shops, new and used, and they say that you can't get just the plastic cover by itself, you have to replace the whole dial surround with it. Anyone have experience of this? I'm also wondering how the heck it happened anyway...

It can be swap from another cluster assembly. I don't think you can buy just the part new.

I concur... doesn't look like they sell the assembly.

There are numerous wrecked Xs on e-bay that are being parted out. Contact one of the dis-assemblers and get one.

I managed to get a look at one of these in the dismantlers' yard, seemed like you can't separate the clear plastic from the instrument panel (black plastic) - of course they wanted me to buy the whole assembly, but it was way more scratched than my original one - I can kind of put up with it if I don't look from the side, but just want to replace the 'glass' cover without changing the dial surrounds

Can't upload pics to my ftp just now so I added attachments...

The clear pc and black gauge surround seperates from the gauge cluster. See "titanium ring install" in the "how to" section of this forum for instructions.
