who uses navcoder?? help

hi all.
finally got around it installing my navcoder softwate and interface today. I went for a usb interface from ebay (3 wires one and and the mini usb other end)

got it setup and running all ok. could see ibus traffic etc.. flowing through. however when I finished I shut down the laptop. disconnected the usb lead from the interfact and tucked the interface ontop of the nav.

when I went to go in the car and go out the whole screen/radio etc.. was dead.

it wasn't until I plugged the interface back into the pc it started working again. I tried this a few times and it seems everytime the interface is disconnected the screen/radio etc.. will stop working. if its its turned on and disconnected the radio remains on with no way to turn off. the only way I could overcome this was disconnecting the yellow (power) wire from where I spliced into and the bmw system acted normal again..

anyone experienced this or know why

Grant, i read your explanation a few times and still can't picture what you have done and how... you spliced your interface (Resler iBus?) into the iBus and power of the car? the USB has 4 connectors, 2 connectors are data, one is (+) and the other one is (-/ground) 5VDC. if the other end of the interface has 3 wires, that means that you have 2 for data, and the other one is probably for ground? could it be that the other one is (+)? i think the issue could be with one of those "power" wires...

Hi, if im honest i got my dad to do the splicing as hes good with wiring and electrics. however the interface i got does have 3 wires 12v, ibus and ground
the interface i used was a usb interface like this BMW IBUS I-BUS to USB Interface / Adapter Cable | eBay
i had use reslers in the past (5 years ago on my e39) but i got this usb one as my laptop only has usb.
I have just text him to get more info on what he spiced where. i think he used the nav rather than cd changer as there was a bit more room..
the interface itself works fine its just when disconnecting it it seems to kill/ lock the system. as i say the only way i could resolve as a temp measure was to disconnect the power from the ibus interface. My dad suggested putting a switch in however im sure no one else has ever experienced this issue before so would like to find a resolution.

i did have similar issues 5 year ago when using resler interface with my E39. it would kill the screen/nav radio etc on disconnection..

so I spoke to my dad there were only 3 wires + (power) - (ground) and the 3rd wire to the ibus. however no idea why my interface requested power to the usb otherwise it kills the ibus...

It sounds like either a dodgy unit, or dodgy wiring.
The IBus is a single wire bus, and if your ibus unit is pulling and holding the iBus wire at low voltage, it will stop other components talking to each other on the bus.
It's possible that when you power the USB side of your adapter, it stops pulling the iBUS wire low, and allows everything to communicate.

It's an incredibly bad design if it's pulling an open collector output low when it is powered down.

Your dad sure he got the wiring right? (Sounds like it is right, if you're able to read iBus messages when the USB side is powered)....

Let us know how you go. I'll have a think more tomorrow when I'm awake...

I have both a USB resler, and an older RS232 resler. I remember I had some wierd behaviour at first.., which turned out I'd incorrectly wired the iBus side..

Cheers
Scott.
