Mirror display options...

I notice each time I start the X that my mirror goes through a series of diagnostics - flipping from what appears to be Temperate > Time > Compass.

Any idea how to change the setting?

Your mirror? Like in your interior rear view mirror? It has a display that indicates something other than a compass?

I've never seen anything as you describe in an e53 that was original...and it's not listed in the parts database either...again, the only "display" listed is for "compass":

• EC = Electrochromatic (auto-dimming)
• Radio = Radio-wave remote control
• LED = Light-emitting diode for alarm system
• GTO = Integrated remote control/garage door opener
• FLA = High-beam assistant
• Compass = Digital compass display
• ETC = Electronic Toll Collection
• TLC = Out-of-lane warning

I have a fully loaded (original window sticker includes every available option) and the mirror only and has ever only read the compass.

Watch the mirror as you turn the key from position 1 to position 2 (Just before start) mine displays as follows...

What BMW market are you in...again, there's no mirror like that offered in the part database for the USA.

EDIT: on a hunch...I did some searching on the Land Rover forums since they share some components with the X5 due to BMW owning/designing Range Rovers at one point in the late 90's just prior to the launch of the e53. You might find this tidbit interesting:

Ryan, The '188C/F' you were seeing displayed on the mirror is 'all segments' of the Vacuum Fluorescent display lit at the same time. The VFD used on the compass mirror in the 2000+ D2s is also used on other vehicles that have compass and temp read-out. Your mirror is compass only. If the mirror displays 'C' it means it is in calibration mode and you need to drive the vehicle in a slow circle 1 or 2 times to recalibrate the compass. The only thing that would cause the VFD (Display) to show all segments would be if the compass sensors(located in the plastic channel mount cover where the mirror mounts to the windshield) were exposed to a larger then normal magnetic field (several gauss). If the problem happens again let me know and I maybe able to help you more. I work for the company that makes the mirrors supplied to the 2000+ rovers (not the pre 2000 leakers).

Mine does the same thing. the answer I got was bmw uses the same mirror for different models that allow the temperature to be in the mirror but not on the x5
