Would 4.8is Instrument Cluster fit in 2004 4.4

i speak from person experience. I installed a 4.8is cluster into a 2004-2006 X5 4.4i without any special programming or special coding for all functions to work.

The 04-06 4.4i uses a similar ECU as the 4.8is. as well as the 2002-2008 E65/E6x/E7x vehicles with the same engine. All N62 E6x/E7x vehicles have the warm up "ticks" on their clusters vs on I-BUS vehicles use LEDS. The engine computer has the logic already active for the LEDs to function correctly.

Will the cluster work without any coding? unlikely. It must be coded to the vehicle for the functions to work correctly. If you are using a used cluster, i would recommend zeroing out the milage and to virgin the cluster and then code it based on the ZCS. The coding procedure with ISTA/P will adopt the mileage and SIA data from the Lamp Module.

05 4.4i here - almost makes me want to try it... but I'm definitely no pro with ISTA so my issue would be that I'd never get it coded, but I'd have this really pretty 4.8is cluster staring at me in the garage that would drive me crazy every evening pulling in like, " you don't have me installed or working yet"...

I plan on working on this project for personal interest when I have time, but it's pretty involved. Here's what I learned.

You need to take the cluster apart, desolder a chip, program new chip with a special programmer, solder it back in. That's how vin and mileage gets adjusted.
Then you need to reflash your dme with a modified firmware for the oil temp and rings to work.
Then you need to code the cluster to your car.
You cannot change the mileage without desoldering the chip. You cannot change mileage in pasoft, bmwscanner, ista etc. You need to take apart the cluster, which is tricky. It requires skill. Not to screw up the stepper motors for the needles. That's why I paid fixers.
I think it was a very fair price. Expensive but fair.
In the future I would like to practice taking apart spare cluster, before I'd attempt risking taking apart 4.8 cluster
