A couple of days ago I saw the 4x4 light was on at first start. As I reversed down the driveway I steered lock to lock and the light went out.
Today, the light is on again and the steering didn't do it. Tried a few times. Car seems to be driving OK, no odd noises. Ideas? Only light that's on is the 4x4 light, not the 'trifecta'. We're heading out to Maui for 2 weeks tomorrow morning but are leaving the car for our house sitter to use. Not sure if this is a problem that'll stop her from using the car. Ideas?

Good day!
Would be great to pull the codes, but sounds like the steering angle sensor is failing... Just a guess... Do you have a way to pull codes? Cheers!!!

I have no way to pull codes, and no time to do any diagnosis. From what I've been able to find, the 4x4 light being on means the DSC and AWD are inactive.

That is true, but there are a variety of things that can give you that warning light and without having the codes read there's no way to know what is causing your particular problem. In my case it was a bad steering angle sensor. Yes, it disables the DSC, but you can drive it that way without any trouble. I did for a couple weeks while I waited for my replacement. No big deal you just don't want to get crazy with your driving.

True. I've warned our house sitter that she'll need to drive carefully. It's winter and the roads can be slick as greased marbles sometimes. I don't think she's ever driven a car that doesn't have the nanny electronics. She's staying close to the house.
I have a trusted indy who has the needed tools to pull the codes. I've never been a 'jack up the rad cap and drive a new car under it' or a shotgun repair type. I'll try not to think about it whilst sipping Mai Tai on the beach for the next two weeks.

Hello
I had to replace a dead battery and when I put the new battery in ,, my 4 x 4 light came on,, was not on until the battery went dead. Will try the lock to lock on the steering wheel. Thank you |

start the car and turn the steering wheel lock to lock. That should clear it.

So, back from Maui. Went to my indy today and he found two codes about the transfer case, one just said transfer case failure, the other said the oil was contaminated. I've not heard any of the clicking noises you should hear when the actuator gear is stripped, but I'm tempted to order the gear anyway and replace it along with the fluid. He reset the codes but it didn't clear the light. Other ideas?
BTW, I caught a magnificent humpback breach off Lahaina on February 16th while on a whale watching excursion. 80 tons of grace.
