Which diagnostic software to look for?

Have experienced another issue with the X recently ('02 4.4).

Symptoms:
Warm engine stumbling/dying when coming to a stop, or rolling with foot off the gas. Always seems to fire back up, but then has a "jerky" idle until it stalls again. Problem seems to be intermitant. Eg: drove 12-15m to the store where it stalled about four times while I was trying to find a parking spot. No issues about half an hour later on the ride home.

From the research that I've done on this site, it sounds like it might be a Cam shaft position sensor that's the culprit (feel free to chime in if you think otherwise). At any rate, I figure that I should run a diagnostic to (hopefully) find out for sure.

Question is: When looking for a shop to run the test, what diagnostic software do they need to have to properly do the job? I've heard people mention GT1, is this still the case, or are there others? Will a generic OBD II reader not do the trick?

TIA

generic OBD II will NOT do the trick... or, rather, will trick you into something else...

with your symptoms, i would start with vacuum troubleshooting first... start simple, move to more complex later...

check air filter, MAF, throttle body... fuel supply... eliminate those... then move to engine internals... lol... a diagnostic suite of softwares would help... check out out romanian friend on ebay...

Find the reputable BMW Indy and let them worry about diagnostic software. Unless you want to DIY.

Romanian Diagnostic

I recently purchased the software and cable from the Romanian provider on Ebay.
Had "operator" problems installing on my computer. I contacted the seller and he provided some additional instructions, still didn't solve "operator "problem.

I contacted him again and he spent three hours ( due to a slow connection ) via Teamview, software where he took over my computer and installed the system, it works great.

I can't say enough positive about this seller. He has a great product and wants it to work when you buy it.

Software will help but you still need to have some mechanical aptitude.

Its good to know this Romanian package seems to work for most people. I ordered mine in December and its supposed to arrive tomorrow! Plan on doing some coding as well as get more detailed information about my fault codes.
