You can use any name brand API-SM or SN oil that isn't a BMW LL-04 spec. 5w-30 is a good choice.

I used the BMW oil from the dealer because it was the same price as other oils from the autoparts store, and I had to go to the dealer anyway to get an OE filter. Filter matters at least as much as oil, if not more so.

I am not up on the latest Castrol blends and technologies, but see little reason to pay more for marketing hype.

That can certainly be caused by oil change intervals that are too long. And by the engine running too cold. And by too many short trips. Or by a combination of all of the above. Which seems most likely, in this case.

How much does it usually cost for BMW High Performance Full Synthetic Oil?
This site where I bought my brakes from has a full kit for $88.00 and free ground shipping. Is that a good deal? They also sell one quart for $7.20

Here's a happy coincidence; Advance Auto Parts has a buy one get one free deal on some of their oils. I'll be picking up 30 quarts of Mobil Super Synthetic 5W-30 this week for about $3.50 a quart; that'll cover two changes for both my X5 and my daughter's 318Ti.

I've never called my dealer about how much they sell their oil for but if the dealer would sell the oil for $5.00 a quart it would be about the same as buying from getbmwparts.com technically since the nearest dealer near me is about 40 miles away, so the trip to and from would be about $30 in gas money. Or I can go to Wal-Mart and pick up 2 5 quart jugs of Castrol Extended Performance Motor oil for about $60+. Also an indy has a $109 oil change special, what price would be better? HAHA
