Sport Steering Wheel 06/00 in a 12/02 X

I picked up a three-spoke sport steering wheel off a base-model X5 3.0i, build date on the wheel looks to be 06/00. Being a base model, it had black plastic trim instead of wood or titanium. I ordered a titanium cover from BMW South Atlanta, but am having trouble getting it to fasten in with the existing screws.

I was also curious if I'm going to run into any airbag problems, since it's my understanding BMW changed to dual-stage deployment at some point.

Nevermind, my apologies.

After a few beers and an ample amount of frustration, I ended up with with a power drill and just forcing the SOBs in there. Fits nice and snug now.

Still worried about the airbag thing.

Airbag change was in 03/99 for the E39 so I am pretty sure that all X5 has dual-stage airbag.

Ditto...change from single stage air bag to dual stage air bag was 3/99. So 00~02 are both dual stage air bags

Thanks guys, y'all were right. Got it in a couple of nights ago. Pics to follow, but not sure I'm happy with it. Looks out of place. So I may be selling it and going back to my standard 4-spoke.

What don't you like about it? Can't tell from the pic due to the dark/low contrast...but does the lower (silver) trim piece match the interior trim? If not, that may be what's throwing you off.

I plan on swapping my 2004 sport wheel out for an older wheel too. As soon as I'm able to find one in good shape.

Don't really care for the newer look steering wheels.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
For what its worth you can have your current wheel recovered, I had mine done to look like this, paid $250 from a seller in Germany, and he let me keep my wheel, all I needed was to transfer my airbag and inner controls:

Really improves the driving experience. You can find similar on ebay.de for your Sport Wheel if you want it recovered, personally I love the Facelift sport wheel.

If you have the coin, an E83 M-sport wheel will reuse your stock airbag. Its pricey though.

Here's a company in the States that does some nice custom work:

E39-46 M Sport Steering Wheel

I don't have any personal experience, but I've seen good things about them on other forums.
