E46 m54 automatic turbo...x5 3.0 auto turbo?
The above thread over on E46fanatics details a turbo set up for an m54 3.0 automatic. How applicable (with a bit of tweaking for differing component location and other E53-specific quirks) would this be for the 6-cyl X5's?

Technically it should work just fine maybe with a bit of manifold changing, memory escapes me but the ESS supercharger for the M54 fits our X5's just fine with a slight change in the exhaust manifold I think.
but I wonder if the tune for the turbo is any different between auto and manual?

Just browsing through the thread it looks like he is paying over 7k for the turbo setup.
ESS supercharger kit is 5300, able to be installed by yourself with hand tools, daily driven reliability and plenty of power, and proven tuning by those guys. If I were dropping the coin they would get my money no doubt.

+2 on the ESS Twinscrew supercharger. The supercharger becomes the intake manifold. You don't have to touch the exhaust manifold with the supercharger, but a set of headers would compliment the mod very well.
With the turbo setup, you'd have to put in a special exhaust manifold. Just for fun, I may see how cheaply I can put together a turbo kit.

I was looking into the ESS twinscrew setup around 5 yrs ago ('05 E46 330i, 6 speed manual trans).
Peak power is produced around 7200/7400 RPM. With a 3 pedal car you can hit the peak (later shift), the issue with auto trans cars is they shift too soon. I think Conforti sells the Shark Injector to raise the autobox shift point, a MUST if you want the full power effect.

Good points guys. Was just pondering on a setup that is proven for auto box equiped vehicles.
The supercharger is a lot simpler to install, agreed. Not many documented auto trany car installs though. I saw one on that forum by member Hagee of Germany, but it was comparatively tame at around 275hp only. The forum has another autobox trannied turbo 325i(!) build in the 400+hp range...the transmision died in 1100 miles or so though!
