Is my X5 4.4 a N62 or M62?
Hi everyone, usually I have been able to find all of my answers through the search function but have been unable to find the necessary information for this post. Long story short, my indy mechanic believes I have a M62 engine and I thought I had a N62. I need the PCV (CCV) replaced due to cold weather issues and as it has been noted in other threads the difference in work between the two is substantial.
I have entered the VIN into a few decoders and have only come up with: 4.4L V8 FI DOHC 32V. Any help is greatly appreciated and I apologize if this thread already exists and I was just unable to locate it.

If it's a 2005 it's an N62

Also, if your mechanic can't tell the difference between the M62 and N62 I would seriously consider finding a new mechanic. Just looking at the two you can tell the difference.

ditto...and if you type in the last 7 digits of your VIN at any of the online part data bases like:
...all 3 of those sites above would have indicated in the columns (that will be preselected when using your VIN) as well as the info each site provides when you type in your VIN. See a copy of each site listed above...and the information that is given when you type in the last 7 digits of your VIN (I used my VIN as an example): ![]() (Realoem.com)
(BMWfans.info) (Maximillian Import Co)

Thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it!
Brandon002: I will definitely be looking for and taking my vehicle to a new mechanic from now on. And after reading through the forum posts this morning I will be changing the CCV myself when I get home from work tonight. Thanks again!

Yeah, CCV on the N62 is a breeze. I just did mine last week, took a total of 20 minutes, that included removing the engine covers and wiping out the CCV holes to clear the mayo out. Make sure if you have a lot of build up that you do a hot oil change shortly after, or even a Lubro-Moly engine flush which seems to be recommended by other forum members. Something I plan to do once it warms up.

And it's also easy to tell the difference (as mentioned above) by just looking at the engine's accoustic cover...or even if the cover is removed...the M62TU & N62 engines are different looking enough to NOT ever be confused with each other.
