CCV? Sorry, this again... :-(

Was sitting at a drivethru recently with my window open, and heard a slight whine/whistle when I shifted into Park. Sounds like it's coming from underneath toward the front somewhere. Experimented a bit, when I shift into reverse, changes pitch a bit, and Nuetral and Drive I hear nothing. Can't hear it with windows close, very slight, barely noticeable. Any help/suggestions on this?

WOW, I can't believe its another CCV topic. Does your X5 shake when stopped (in gear or in neutral or in park)?
I'd say its a belt tensioner. under load it can disappear.

There are 135K on the truck itself, but 95K on the used motor i put in it. Yes, I have plans to do a total timing chain and vanos overhaul in the spring.

The only time I feel shaking, actually more of a vibration, is when I'm in drive and come to a stop at a red light, stop sign, etc. If I shift into N, it disappears. That was my next question, is this normal? No shaking whatsoever, otherwise...

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
If it disappears when shifting out of gear (under drivetrain load) perhaps motor mounts or cv joints??

Dunno that's a weird one

If it only shakes in drive at a stoplight, and putting it in neutral stops the shaking, then it just sounds like the idle speed is too low. The drag of the transmission lowers it just enough for the rough idle to be perceptible.

Is this something I can adjust myself, or do I need to get my Indy to adjust my idle?

If it works like vw, the system self adjusts the idle based on other factors. Maybe the Icv or throttle body needs a cleaning. Then reset the throttle adaptation and it would be ok.

Again not sure if this is how the system works but how I understand it

Idle like everything else on a BMW is controlled by the Computer. Unlike carbs and early fuel injection systems where there was an idle screw to allow for adjustment, the idle is not adjustable.

You don't normally adjust it, but there are a myriad of things that can impact it, including vacuum leaks, idle control valve, etc.

I believe it can be adjusted using a service computer, but you shouldn't need to.
