P0339 Crankshaft Position Sensor, A Circuit, Intermittent

Hi, my 2004 X5 3.0 SES light just came on.

Code reader shows "P0339 Crankshaft Position Sensor, A Circuit, Intermittent"

1. Has anyone else had this code and do I need to just replace the sensor?
2. Is it difficult to replace? I don't even know where it is.

Thanks in advance!

yes you will need to replace the sensor. it is a reasonably easy job to do and takes 20 minutes. It is held on with a 5mm bolt. They only cost around $30

When I had this code couple of years ago, I was struggling which one to replace, intake or exhaust, cus the price is different.

After replacing the intake one, which took about 30 minutes, it's been running like a champ ever since.

He has a crankshaft sensor DTC not a camshaft sensor DTC. Two different sensors. If you aren't familiar with it just bring it in. Shouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred to fix.

Yes crankshaft not camshaft. Problem is I live 3 hours from dealer so big hassle to come in.

If someone knows where it is, would you mind posting a picture?

Thanks again!

Item number 8 follow the lines to where it is mounted on the block. You will have to getr underneath the car to remove it.

Well I haven't done anything or clear any codes and SES light went off on it's own!

Should I still replace sensor or just wait to if code comes back?

12141709616

VDO-Siemens OEM
Crankshaft Position Sensor
1 per car.

$125.36

$81.59

SALE

12141709616OE

Genuine BMW (Alternate Brand)
Crankshaft Position Sensor
1 per car.

$125.36

$120.35
<H5 style="TEXT-DECORATION: line-through">$125.36

Although SES light's off, code reader still reads P0339 so I'm replacing sensor. I'm a bit confused as to OEM vs. GenuineBMW.

Which sensor would you buy from the 2 above?
Thanks!

OEM means original equipment manufacturer that means they provide parts to auto makers. Genuine BMW mean that is the original equipment supplier and the parts should have the BMW logo on it.
