There is a common problem with the axial bearing failing. Causes that hard 1-2 shift

I stopped by the shop yesterday as he had the transmission torn down. Needless to say, when you see your transmission on a table in 1000 pieces it is a little bit of a shock if you have not seen it that way before. I now know why it cost to have it done.

Here are two pics of what they have found so far. They still are going to break down the drums to make sure they are good. Also, the O ring gasket that is also subject to breaking was still in tact.

Also, can anyone direct me to a good rebuild kit that I can relay to the shop.

Sorry to hear about your latest troubles smwmustang, I thought all was good after the timing chain guidesl/oil pressure ordeal. Man you're gonna be mentally exhausted when and if this whole ordeal is over for good, I think I see a Craigslist ad in your future.

romeokc10 you are correct...not sure at this point but I may have to walk away and cut my losses. Car may be fine but only time would tell. It does appear to running well and correctly but need to be able to drive it a little to find out.

I rebuilt two ZF 5hp24 transmissions and I bought the parts from:

The CTSC - ZF Parts

Transmission Kit : Automatic, Standard Transmission and Transfer Case Rebuild Kits, Cobra Transmission Parts 1-800-293-1848, Cobra Transmission

and

Eriksson Industries

It depends how quick you want the parts call them and choose the right one for you.
All of the above were VERY good companies. All highly recommended.

Hope to have the car back this week. There was some trash in the torque convertor so it was sent out to be rebuilt. It did not arrive on Friday so it should be in today. The rest of the transmission is back together with a full rebuild kit. Not sure what kit but I will find out.

I will update again once it is complete and I have more info.

Car is ready and I should be able to pick it up today. They were still figuring cost so hopefully it won't be too bad. That is all realative I guess and the fact I have no idea what he was going to charge me....it is less than the $8000 BMW wanted!!!

I will update again tonight or tomorrow.

Out here, the trans rebuilders are all flat rate...
Post the charge when all said and done.

It's around $3200-$3500 out here from any of the more reputable shops

Ok, the car is ready and I am picking it up today. Total cost is $1950 plus tax. Shop told me he had about $1250 in it himself. He is a long time family aquaintance and a long time customer of my fathers so I know he helped me out a little. But, this will let you know what it takes to have it rebuilt with a full kit as well as rebuilding the convertor. I will get him to give me a breakdown on all the cost.

I know he spent some more time on it last wed as they were having trouble with it staying in park and had to change something so he does have some labor in it and it is not easy to get it out of the car.

Now to see how she runs with the new engine work and tranny!!! Yea me...it has only been 174 days since I have actually driven it and it worked properly. Couple days short of 6 months and only about 100 miles on the car.

Here we go.....

The car appears to be running good and I will drive it a little before seeing what she will do. Transmission shop did say it would nomally cost around $2800 but he was able to save me some money on parts.

Complete rebuild including the torque convertor so everything is fresh and ready to go.
