X5 engine history

**** I've got enough info now, no need to reply. Thanks! *****

You know, I had such an awesome response to my request for pictures that I'm going to mine this vast source of knowledge yet again. I'm doing a piece for the Roundel on the history of the X5, and I'm not having much luck getting any information from BMW NA. What I'm looking for is a timeline on the progression of engines offered in the American market for the E53. I'll post the same query in the E70 forum. And if there are any other noteworthy changes during the life of the E53, that would be good to know as well. I am shockingly, annoyingly ignorant about the X5 and all of its permutations.

Can you guys and gals help me out with this? I will be forever grateful and I'll try to throw in a plug for the forum as well.

Thanks!
Michael

There is a very detailed report on wikipedia... just look up the X5 on wiki and almost all that information is right there.

Here's some articles from the Roundel & BIMMER that I've saved over the years:
  1. BIMMER Article - August/2000: https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=aL...d-qjdT8Lv-dy*w
  2. Roundel Article - January/2004: https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=wj...Ses1MRaCs-2geg
  3. BIMMER Article - June/2006 (see corrected "pantheon" list below...the page in the BIMMER article has incorrect info about transmissions after the face-lift): https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=Lm...dbU4DfoRMCK9uQ
  4. BMW e53 X5 Introduction - https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=kM...kwE7ztCqaJLd9Q

Not engine info, but the 4.6 also got quite a bit of seam welding to stiffen the unibody.

Hey guys and gals, thanks for all the great info!!! I've got enough now to proceed.

Here are some answers to questions raised:

Wiki is a good source, sometimes, but who knows who wrote it, and often car stuff is eurocentric, and I just want USA info.

I never know when (or even if) my stuff gets published, but I'm going to guess this story will be in the May issue. Or June. October?

Remember that BMW was tapped out with the 4.4 when it came time to enter the ring with other big boys. So, Alpina came into the picture. IMO, I am driving a very unique vehicle that only lasted two short years.

I can prove this: from a 2009 Ford GT500 to a 2003 BMW X5 4.6is, my insurance (full coverage) went down.... By one (1) dollar per month!

Don't ask what they wanted to insure a 2007 BMW Alpina B7. Then, don't ask what anyone wanted for just the drivetrain for a 2/24! Rape!
