BMW Independent shops - tranny service quote $$$

Went to 2 independent shops today to get quoted on a tranny filter and fluid change in my x5
Initially they quoted me 550$ which I was ok with but then they asked for the last 7 of the VIN and after they checked the type of tranny I have, the price went up to 1050$ .
They said I have the exact same transmission that comes on the 2007+ E70 4.8i and those have a mechatronic thing that has some seals and it's wise to change them cuz they start leaking at some point...and since they're dropping the pan anyway it's good to do those too...am I getting ripped off or what?that seems like a lot of money..
Called the second shop and they were a little cheaper at 850$ but still..for a fluid change , filter and seals?
What do you guys think?

Is the second shop also going to replace the seal for the mechatronic connector for $850?

Total scam!

The filter / gasket / mechtronic plug seal is only $60 in parts.... you don't HAVE to put the "lifeguard" back in. I did it in my driveway for a little over $100 and I used RL D4 ATF and it made a HUGE difference in the shifting and got rid of the cold fluid first shift blues too!

my local trans shop told me they would do it for $200

I have the ZF 6HP26X and it has a steel pan. make sure you clean the magnets and put them back in the same orientation you found them in

That's how they make their $ and pay their bills.
I'll DIY and pay $250 for ZF ATF and filter.

You guys don't mention your mileage, or kind of use, I'm wondering what to do about our 06 3.0 at 63,000 miles very light use, (my wife, light foot, is the principal driver)

I did mine @ 100k miles and the previous owner had a 19" boat he towed. And honestly the fluid looked good with no visible particulates and the magnets were clean. The filter was nasty tho! I contacted ZF directly and they told me it should be done between 75k-100k "under normal conditions"

I completely plan on doing it again at 200k

I would hardly call towing a 19" () boat a heavy load on a X5 with a V8 engine. I tow my 14'-0" jet boat with just the I6 engine, no problems.
