Crankshaft sensor question...

I just got done swapping out my CKP Crankshaft position sensor on my 2005 3.0 x5/6 and just tried to start it and now it will not stay running. It will run if I pump the pedal but will not idle.

So, my question is do I need to reset something in the EMS (disconnect battery?) or did I get a faulty sensor? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do you have your MAF plugged in? they are similar connectors, did you mix them up? And do you have any codes on the dash? CPS voltage should throw a code if the replacement was bad.

Only unplugged the CKP from underneath car. Didn't need to move anything else except some zip ties.
Think I've got a code but can't figure out how to read it w/o GT1 ? Any other way to read codes?

Thanks for the quick replies

Any idea if siemens vs vdo would cause problems? I'm I wrong in thinking this would just be a replace and go job?

Sure you got the right sensor? Did you compare them? As for Siemens vs VDO, did you look at the interchangeability number? There are various permutations of all the engines in an X5 family.

Eye balling it was the right sensor. Going to pull it out in the morning and run down to the dealer and get an OE I guess. Wonder how to test the VDO i got? and the Original for that matter as its the only real reason I was changing it was b/c warm starts started getting harder/intermittent.

Problem solved... at least for now. Went out and started it up just to see how it would act and low and behold it slowly worked into a grove and seems to have found its self again. Cycle it on and off a few times and the SES light went away and all looks good. Not sure it cured my weak warm start problem but for now its back and running. Wife will like that!
