I wouldn't say there is a "35" engine line. 35 simply refers to a virtual displacement, upped from 3.0 litres due to turbocharging and marketing.

There have been multiple "35" gasoline engines, and multiple "35" diesel engines for that matter.

I had an N54 (which is an engine range) in my 2008 535. It had two small turbos. It was sold at 300 hp in North America, but there was widespread disbelief that that rating was real, as many reported pulling close to that power on chassis dynos. It was sold at 320 hp IIRC in the 335is and the 740 (there we go with virtual displacement again). It was sold at 330 hp IIRC in the 1M and the Z4.

In North America the N54 was superseded by the N55. It has one turbo that the marketing department dubbed Twin Power. It is or has been sold at 300 hp (X3, X5, most '35' models); 315 hp (M135, 35is models, 740); 320 hp (M235) and 340 hp (Z4 35is).

I could be a couple of hp out on any of these, as the ratings are different in different markets (NA vs others) and also Euro horses are smaller so the engine gets more rated hp in Europe. That is another way of saying the ancillary loads are calculated differently when they calculate the hp.

There are also performance upgrades available through the accessory parts system from BMW for various models, consisting of coding and sometimes more. They look like they move the engine up to the next bracket within the same range.

M Sport usually isn't a power designation, it is often an M look alike (body kit) with badges, and sometimes suspension tuning. The M135 and M235 models are exceptions. Not sure where it will go next.

I agree with JCL... from my understanding all "35i" cars are run by the same N55 engine, but i suspect their slight difference in hp is due to a different tune on each model...
look into Dinan or Cobb tuning - they should give you a 15% gain with a quick flash of the ECU...

I don't think we are agreeing on that, since the first 35i models used the N54. The N55 replaced the N54.

sorry what i meant, was that the difference in bhp between some of the new models running N55 exists due to different tune on the car...
