My story is the perfect example of why to do adequate research on the car model you want to buy, as well as always performing a PPI on said car. So My wife and I bought a 05' Lemans Blue x5 4.8is with 69k mi with alcantara interior and chrome rims...it was her perfect car so we had to pay the high asking price of 22k for it. The interior and exterior were clean and the only known issue the dealer made us aware of was that the rear tires neeeded to be replaced asap. So we drove the car for a week and that's when the problems started, white smoke emitting from the exhaust and a check engine light soon to follow. We had the car evaluated at a local indy shop and they determined that the car needed, valve stem seals, valve cover gasket, air filter, spark plugs, drivers side cv boot, air suspension compressor and oil pressure switch and probably a few other things I can't remember. For the few miles that we drove the car it was nice, with the intoxicating v8 sound and the ride quality of a 3 series sedan...but never have I met such a maintenace WHORE in my life. That says alot because I'm 27, I've owned 10 BMW's total including this one , 2 e46 330i's,1 e46 325i, 2 e46 m3's, 1 e30 325is, 1 e36 m3, 1 e28 535is and one e39 m5. Without further ado, here's what you all really came here for.
