cheap seat replacement
As anyone switched out the foam pad and leather cap of there driver seat with the passenger seat? Can this be done? My driver seat is shot, but my passenger is like new. It would save a bunch of money if I could switch them out by removing the leather cap and foam. The seat backs are fine.
Just wondering.

I haven't done it in my X5 but I have done this in my other BMWs. If you do a search for this, you will see that its generally common practice and is easily done. Some chairs to require special pliers, so you may want to find a break down DIY for the E46/53 chairs.

You need a set of bullnose pliers and bull rings. Some upholstery know-how comes in handy as well but the job itself isn't that difficult.

Yes, it can be done but I wouldn't put the old cushion in the passenger seat - I'd toss the old one and buy a new one - $150 online.

Why not try a wrecking/scrap yard. Maybe a part out on this site, or do an internet search.

Interested in eventually refurbishing my seat cushions. The thigh bolsters by the door side have seen better days. Link please?

Most online dealers have the seat cushion. Or for a few bucks more you can just buy it at your local dealer.

RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i Seat front, upholstery & cover base seat

These are the standard seats. RealOEM has the sport seat parts too.

Got it, I saw those before but thought there might be less expensive options, especially for the leather seat covers. Thanks though!

Yes, the leather seat covers ARE expensive ($700-$1000 for the seat cushion cover). The other ones listed are cloth and leatherette (vinyl).
