4.4i w/ 19" Tires on snow/ice?

I am considering the purchase of a 05 4.4i with sport package & 19" wheels/tires.

Will this be satisfactory in inclement weather (i.e. snow & ice) or will I need winter tires?

My other option is to lease a 06 3.0i w/ standard wheels/tires, but I am coming from a 740il and am concerned about performance issues of the V6 vs. the V8 engine.

Any advice is appreciated.

:welcome: to X5 World! Hmm..An '05 X5 with 19" wheels....

I think you should buy this one, and then replace the wheels with something more suitable for inclement weather, and then contact me when you want to sell them...

Just kidding..Ive been after those wheels since I was in the womb, and have not been able to get any for VARIOUS reasons...

Anyway, with regards to your question, I sell cars, and the word "lease" is not in my vocabulary...How'd you like that 750?!

I love the 740il. Getting rid of it is an extremely difficult decision, but it is getting near the end of its warranty and I am concerned about future maintenance/repair costs and resale value. I drove the 4.4i for the 1st time yesterday and liked it alot. It seems to be as powerful as the 740, but definitely feels like a truck compared to the sedan. BMW is offering great 24 month leases for the 3.0i and I can get the exact color combo (Black w/ Brown) that I like, but then I found a good deal on a white/black 05 4.4i.
I have concerns about buying the 4.4i as the new 07 body style will probably hurt the resale value of the current body style. I have not yet driven a 3.0i and would love to have your feedback.

Lots of discussion on the winter tire issue here, try a search. Bottom line is that the stock sport 19's are not only bad in the snow, they're downright dangerous. My recommendation is to get a set of 17 or 18 inch wheels and tires for winter, and save your beautiful 19's for the good weather. That's what I do...

BTW :xoutpost:

You're gonna need winter tires for sure. The stock tires just skid everywhere. Zero braking power, zero grip Trust me, seeing is believing!

When possible, I think it's ALWAYS a good idea to have dedicated warm weather wheels/tires, and snow wheels/tires. There's no such thing as an all season tire that is even close to being as good as true snow tire in the winter, or a high performance tire in warm weather.
I'd say go for the 4.4 w/ the 19" wheels (most people on this forum - but especially Bozo - will tell you that they love those particular wheels!) and pick up a set of 18x8.5" wheels and mount a good set of snows on them... you won't regret it!
