Oil Leak
Hey Everyone,
My indy, while working the brake line issue I was having, noticed an engine oil leak coming presumably from the back valve cover gasket. I have an 05 4.4i (N62) w/ 65k. Assuming it is a valve cover gasket and he changes both sides, can you please tell me what other issues/items (gaskets, etc.) should be changed out while he's in there (engine runs very smooth and I do not believe there are any other issues)? Thanks to all who answer. |

Did the VCGs on my M62 last month (first time ever), reviewed the Bentley manual for directions/details/tq specs/parts/materals. Best $100 item a BMW owner can purchase.

The point of the thread was assuming it was a valve cover gasket and he did need to start unhooking stuff to get to it, was there any other items I should recommend he look at based on all the great & knowledgeable experience you guys have. Remember, not all of us are mechanically inclined nor do we understand all the in's and out's of our cars, but we do benefit from all the knowledge displayed here. So, again, I appreciate any direction you guys can give me as it relates to additional things to be checked/replaced while he's fixing the oil leak. I figured while he's in there I would have him change the spark plugs too since they are original (10 years old - even though there's only 65k on the clock) Thanks to all who answer. |

Our 2005 3.0 had an oil leak from the filter housing gasket.

I assume "presumably" means the Indy will verify and be able to show you where the oil is coming from?
Assuming only one is leaking and your budget, it would be OK to only replace the one. No one knows if/when the other one will leak and most of what needs to get to one valve cover is not part of what is removed to get to the other. If there are no engine error codes or no funny noises, I would just replace the valve cover gasket(s).

Might not be a bad idea to change the front timing cover gaskets while he's in there. The valve covers need to come off to do that anyway....
On my '05 they were leaking significantly at 109k miles. You can see old vs new and how smashed they were. I just did this back in march. Dry as a bone now (with the exception of a very small vacuum pump/booster leak I found last night) ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I replace my valve cover gaskets at 102K and while in there replaced the spark plugs. 65K seems too soon for valve cover gaskets, have a look for your self or get a second opinion.
