Need help with nav unit
how ever I have a couple questions about. 1) can I leave the gps antenna in the dash section or does it have to be out of it. I don't know where to run it. 2) iam trying to connect the wireless backup camera. I need to connect a wire to ground and a wire to the reverse gear wire. I cant locate that wire. any feedback would be appreciated. thanks |

For power when the trans is in reverse, most people tap into the backup lights. For the ground you can just attach the wire to the metal chassis. As for the antenna, my Garmin GPS works fine without and external antenna.

This is the e53 X5 forum (the 1st generation built between 1999-2006)...and the GPS antenna is in the back of the vehicle (see #1 in diagram below) located on the left side of the roof's rear spoiler. Just checking to make sure you're asking the right crrowd...and not in need of the E70 or F15 X5 crowd (2007-to present). ![]() ![]() ![]()

Aftermarket systems like the dynavin come with a separate GPS antenna module, so year model is irrelevant.
OP, I have had success with mounting them to a metal part of a the from in the dash support. You just want it sitting up as close to the underside of the dash skin as possible. Perhaps pull the upper vents out, feed it back up I'm there and a bit of double sided body mould tape will stop it dislodging and rattling.

Iam just trying to figure and plan everything out before I go.
I hooked it up roughly again just to try the GPS antenna. Signal seems to be strong, I shoved in the dash just to see and it had good signal, so that's where I'll be putting the GPS antenna behind the unit in the dash . The other question I have is where do I hook up the orange Ilumini wire to? So that the lights on the new unit work. Also the camera I got is supposed to fit in the license plate light, but that's the upper part of the trunk and no way to connect to a reverse wire from there. The reverse light is on the bottom hatch. Does that mean I have to get the round one and drill it in that area? |
