All y'all owners ARE giving yer fan a wiggle every so often, right?
On my cars that have a longitudinal engine with fan mounted to the water pump (i.e., E53), maybe a few times a year I'll wander out on a Sat morning and pop hoods, grab hold of the fan, and try to wiggle it fore & aft. Should be no detectable play. About year or so ago, the X5 fan "wiggled." No other symptoms, no leak, no noise, but any perceptible movement means 'tis on the short road to a bigger problem. I ordered a water pump off Rockauto, and replaced it, along with the idlers and belt. So maybe $100 for the parts load, and an afternoon in the garage. If not caught early, the internal impeller can contact the internal housing and begin to self-destruct. Some cars may be able to tolerate quite a bit. Some may get noisy. And sometimes I wonder, when I read about a more catastrophic failure, if there wasn't an underlying cause that could have been detected and dealt with sooner? My thought for the day. Civdiv99 |

Well considering my idler, tensioners and belts and fan clutch were replaced 2 years ago, where should I be wiggling the fan to test for play?

what is longitudinal engine? is it the I-6? diesel 6? V8? rotary engine? well... i don't think we have rotaries in our cars... on my M62 i had a fan between bumper and radiator.. on the N62, the fan is gone... well.. it is moved on the other side of the radiator, and there is a huge cavity between the bumper and the radiator now...
now, i start wondering, if i should fill that cavity with some gizmos... hmmm... maybe it would be a good spot for a V1? obviously inside a waterproof enclosure... now, i need to see how hot it gets in front of the car, and if the V1 can tolerate under the hood temperatures... you see what you've done, given me more things to think about!!!! grrr...

One running north and south, as compared to a transversely mounted engine in a fwd vehicle.

Viscous clutches on engine-driven fans are prone to wear and eventual failure, so it's a good point you raise. Not often do people consider that replacing the clutch is a relatively inexpensive thing to do.
