Towing

Hi Guys,

Does anybody know,why UHaul won't allow my X to tow an auto transport loaded with e39?

Any ideas,it's roughly 3500 lbs...not 6000 lbs X is capable of.

They want you to rent one of their trucks.

What hitch do you have on the X?

Here in the US, I've rented the largest cargo box and auto transports they have.

I have the OE hitch with a 2" ball.
They rent me the dolly,but it's not a good idea for a RWD e39 and I am not towing it backwards nor removing the drive shaft.

I might as well rent a truck and auto transport and not worry about anything else,but it's rather pricey and X goes back home empty....

Your in Canada, but here in the states, some states will require you to have a 3/4 ton + vehicle just to rent a car dolly. Meaning your vehicle must be rated to carry at least 3/4 of a ton which the X is no where near. Has nothing to do with your hitch.

They told me that X is to light.
Of course they rent a pick–up truck which is a bit heavier and surely is capable of towing the auto transport.
Then,I ask myself,what 6000lbs towing capacity is all about?

I used the tool on their website and entered my vehicle data and the car I was towing (1998 328i - not too far off what you have). It said my combo was fine. Do you have the V8 or 6-cyl? 6-cyl are good for only 5000lbs. Unless you have a manual transmission, then you get 6000lbs. If you update your signature with what you drive, it'll help others help you. Cheers.

I've also read on some of the race forums that they will exclude certain vehicles that have had higher than normal insurance claims (i.e. Ford Explorers for roll-overs, etc.). So, your vehicle may be perfectly capable of towing, but if the actuarial guys do their math and exclude it, it won't happen.

I was told to rent their dolly and remove the drive shaft.They don't recommend towing it backwards on the dolly,but it's up to me they say.
I need to make 260 kms and that's not a good idea to tow it like that.
Now,I am leaning towards renting a truck from them and forget about the rest.Their business model won.
