Does anyone have a cost on painting a hood and repainting a bumper? I'm trying to get pricing together for the cost of this repair at my local bmw dealership with oem parts. I will be meeting with an insurance adjuster this week and I want to make sure I am paid what is due.

My thing with the whole deal is it's one thing for a kid to throw an egg at a car going 25mph its another for a kid to throw a softball size rock (aimed for a windshield) at cars traveling 50mph (just exiting a freeway at 65mph). The latter is attempted manslaughter as far as I am concerned and that is what I would have pushed for if they caught the kids. It seems like every year I'll read a story about something similar happening locally and a driver ends up dead.

I'm over it and I was shortly after it happened. What pissed me off the most was that the first couple that pulled up with a broken out windshield were on there way from Montreal on a road trip to Chicago. They were really nice people and it pissed me off that this was how my city greeted them as they passed through. I have a lot of pride in my city but it seems like were constantly at war with the trash that live of the government, waste everything that is given them and constantly commit petty crime against the hardworking citizens. I just moved out to a suburb and where I lived before was one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city but at night the trash would go through and if your door was unlocked anything would be gone from your car.

There have been a few deaths as a result of similar actions by some knuckle dragging nosepickers. Don't know how to stop it unless you can catch them in the act and run over the protoplasm.

Hard to get past incidents where it is justified to feel violated. Good that it wasn't worse.

Usually the body shop will negotiate with the insurance company if their repair estimate exceeds the estimate of the insurance company.

Anyone want to guess what the insurance adjustor wrote me a check for

Nah, I'm not gonna wait - $4,500. Not mad at it. I can replace the condenser, fan, and grills on my own and I'm still trying to figure out how I want to do the hood. I am very nervous about the color matching. I can get a hood for $500 shipped and then its just up to finding a good painter. I know a few but its gonna be a gamble either way as far as I am concerned.

Matching should not be an issue. Look for a painter that does high-end vehicles like Porsche, BMW or Mercedes. Worst case you can go through a dealer.

Was the adjuster estimates done after the front tear down of the vehicle? or just going around and looking for the obvious?

If they already cut you a check, can they cut another one for supplementary repairs (if there are more damages)?

good call with the secondary cheques if more damage is found upon teardown.
I had fantastic success repainting my two passenger doors by using the local trades college, I spoke with the auto refinishing instructors and they took on my doors as a project.
earlier they had done my jeep hood and windshield frame and the results were nothing short of perfection!
my doors color is sapphire black metallic, and after a month, waxed and washed, I cannot see any difference in color or shade compared to the rest of the truck. The only stipulation that the college had was that I deliver and pick up the parts myself (not leave the entire truck with them.) and cover the cost of paint. (in my case $100)

OH & PA Incidents

mcurcio1989:

You should consider yourself very lucky to not have been physically hurt and only your X5 taking the brunt of the damage.

It appears that this is a more common stupid pastime for delinquent kids in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Here are two links to reports of a similar incident in PA where a woman was injured, as well as an earlier incident in OH where a woman was killed.

Ohio teacher driving on Pa. highway hit in face with 8-pound rock dropped from overpass* - NY Daily News

The Daily Reporter - Google News Archive Search

Good luck with your repairs and maybe you may want to consider altering your travel route, at least for awhile, until these teenage miscreants get the message that they will go to jail for this aggravated assault which is not a game....

All the best!

^^ I totally agree on me getting off easy with this. I can recall multiple incident within the past several years where someone locally has died as a result of this kind of stuff. If they would have caught these kids I would have lawyered up and made a case for aggravated assault. I mean as far as I am concerned throwing a large object at a person on a highway is attempted manslaughter.

There have been multiple reports of this on the news. Unfortunately there really isn't a way for me to get around this without going through even worse areas.

To add insult to injury my expansion tank blew up yesterday. I think this was probably my fault though. I just got the new condenser and fan in but haven't had a chance to install them yet. I was towing my boat and for some reason I left my car idling in my driveway then I pulled out of the driveway and boom. The temp gauge wasn't reading high but I'm guessing it was higher than normal due to not having the operational pusher fan. I knew right away what it was so I got one on order.

I replaced an expansion tank in my old 3 series and I remember it was a pain to yank it up. I'm nervous that I'm going to break the line that goes into the radiator. I really don't understand why bmw couldn't have just put one screw in to hold this down then to have this obnoxious snap fitting. Than again if they just made an expansion tank that didn't blow up we wouldn't have to deal with it.
