Occasional rapid ticking sound coming from this part

What is this part? I've been digging through my Bentley and realoem this morning and cannot identify this thing.

Occasionally I hear this part making a rapid ticking sound. Almost like a mechanical timer. What is it and it it supposed to tick?

It's got an electrical connection then some sort of hose that comes out the other end.

It's at the very front of the upper timing cover on the drivers side of the car.

Sounds like this. This is a couple minutes after a cold-start. Maybe a minute or two after the engine has "stepped down" from the initial variable valve lift setting.

Gets even louder when the hose comes off . Just had that on my E36. The little clip on my hose connector is busted - nothing the zip ties couldn't handle...
