SOLVED - Stereo quit - lights but no sound?

Hopefully someone else has experienced this and can point me in the right direction...

Last night, my stereo started acting up (no nav, but has DSP). While listening, it sounded like all of the high frequencies dropped off. The sub was still playing, but it sounded like nothing else was. After a couple of minutes, it went back to normal. This happened a couple more times, and I got fed up and turned it off.

This morning, I now have no sound at all. The display in the dash appears to be functioning normally, but it will not play any sound, regardless of the iput I choose.

Has my amp died?

could be your amp is starting to go bad or you have a bad ground connection. No experience with this issue myself.

OK - I know it has been a while, but I finally had some time to work on the X this weekend. The area where the amplifier sits had several inches of standing water in it! I pulled the amp and drained the water out. took apart the amp and cleaned and dried everything inside, as well as all of the connections.

The amp still doesnt work. I have checked all of the fuses (unless im missing something - all fuses in the glovebox, as well as the rear compartment by the sub are good). Unless someone knows of something else I should check, I think I'm going to have to start looking for a used amp. It is the Lear 65.12-6 905 119.

And how does water get in that area? I need to fix that before I put another amp in...

Arrow Maybe?

I was thinking the same thing how is water getting into these places? I see a lot of posts about standing water in very bad places like modules and audio equipment. I'm going to take a shot in the dark being most of this stuff is in the rear.
With that said I would check the the rear door hatch weather stripping and seals and look for any obvious sign of rips, tearing, dry rot or punctures.

If not there I would start checking inside where you found the water and try to ascertain which direction the water came from. I would check the wheel wells see if any of the partitions are cracked or missing may have to check behind them as well.
There is another possibility but this is a real shot in the dark being I'm unsure how solid or hollow the upper frame is.
Perhaps the panoramic moon roof has a seal/weather sripping problem and water just finds it's way to the lowest point channeling through the body/frame of the vehicle.

All of this is a sheer guess as I have not have an issue with this thank god.. or at least yet lol Maybe more experienced member will respond with common breach locations. For now if it were me that's where I would start looking.

rear drain of the sunroof are clogged. use compressed air to blow the tubes - the rear ones vent out at the top corners of the rear hatch - you open the rear top gate, you will see two square-ish openings in each corner... by the way, the front ones are drained at the bottom of the car, in the little area between front door and front wheel arch...

i like the seltzer water way - pour seltzer into the roof grooves, watch it work its way out... compressed air is sure way to get it cleaned, though...

Thanks - I'll try blowing out the drain tubes tonight. Now I just need to find a used amp.

I had similar symptoms with non-DSP setup. Worked perfectly when I garaged the car, no sound following morning when I left to work. The amp was dead. Replaced the sucker, everything OK afterwards.

Ok, I fixed the water leak and replaced the amp with a used one tonight. I now get sound for about 30 seconds, then it shuts off. I checked the fuse on the back of the CD player. I also have no control of the DSP. The amp came from an E39 M5. From what I have been able to find, it appears that my amp must have been coded for a nav system, which I do not have. Looks like I will have to get it coded - have I analyzed this correctly?

Is it possible to get this coded without going to the dealer (Indy, or local guy who has the right software)? If so, anyone know of where I can get this done near Portland, Oregon? Thanks!

E39 M5 probably was equipped with nav and DSP... you say you don't have nav but got the DSP? what year/month your X and what year/month on that amp? we have to make sure pinouts on the amps are the same, before venturing into programming... sometimes they change pinout, add or remove signals on the pins...
