OBD II memeory saver ? proven

I have a schumacher OBD II memory savor that has the end you put in cigerate lighter and was thinking of using it when I replace my battery. I`ve never used it yet. just wondering what you guys think of this or will it do more harm than good?

I'm puzzled that you're in a quandry whether it's important to you that you keep any of the things list by disconnecting electrical power.

Only "you" know if resetting any thing lost by the big disconnect is worth it or not. It's only a few things that get lost...depending on how long the swap takes.

Things I know you will lose regardless of disconnect time are OBC calculations (MPG/MPH/DIST/ARRIV), the cluster will go back into lock mode (if you've unlocked it), and the regular sunroof may need to be reset. Also, the OBC features programed into the cluster's display may be lost, too...and you may lose radio presets if disconnected for a while where as a quick swap may preserve them.

No one but you knows if the little things mention don't matter to you...if they do, then use your tool to save those things so you won't have to reprogram them.

so using the OBD II memory tool won`t harm any of the modules in the x5 or computer?

My personal experience is...I use my simple float charger (hooked to the engine bay jump terminals) and before I had the float charger...I used my regular battery charger turned down to 2 amps.

The thing you HAVE to watch out for is...you don't want the battery cables to touch or short out on anything since there's still some power going to the control modules. Wrap rags or take some old socks you need to stop wearing (you know...the ones with the heels/toes worn through...or are so thin they're about to wear through ) around the battery cables for protection. Then when you reinstall the battery...don't dawdle replacing the cables...where you're creating sparks...slap those cables back on the battery posts and tighten them down.

I thought of doing what you said too, but if I did short the terminals out I might have more issues. That why I thought of using the OBD II memory savor.

The OBD II memory saver is doing the same thing....keeping the modules powered...so you still want to be careful removing the battery cables...making sure you don't short a cable while removing the battery.

k cool thx for your expertise , so I`ll loosen the cables off and insulate them with rags or socks and I should be good to go . and using the OBD II memory savor would be 100% save?, unless of course I short out the batt cables.

Got it.

The positive battery cable (the thinner red cable) is the one that is running to the high amp fuse box as well as the fuses on the right side of the cargo bay and up to the glove box fuses. They are powering the control modules etc...so you don't want to send a voltage spike that could damage them...although that's what the fuses are for but as things go sometimes...Murphy's Law comes into play and if something is going to happen...it will happen over something as simple as changing out the battery and accidentally shorting it.
