Battery Safety Terminal

It is my understanding that my 01' X5 (and probably all X5's) have a battery disconnect terminal that blows and disconnects whenever the air bags are activated. I understand the possible need for this in the event of an accident to prevent an electrical fire. The disconnect is buried at the bottom of the spare tire and under the auto leveling compressor, so the possibility of bypassing it would take a half hour if it were even doable.

So my question is, can I disable the activation wire to the battery safety terminal at my own risk? I would rather risk the potential electrical fire than the possibility of being disabled in a survival situation if I had to ram or push my way out of a desperate situation. I live in earthquake country and the vainer of orderly conduct is very thin.

A forum member over on BimmerFest just ran a new positive battery cable from the battery up to where it connects below the driver's foot rest. Perhaps she can offer some advice. Here's a link to here last update to her thread: Bimmerfest - BMW Forums - View Single Post - 2001 E53 Positive Cable Replacement
