06 key fob

Just purchased a 06 X5 and only received a key with a light in it. I am wondering if I buy a key fob for this thing that I can program it to the vehicle. Did x5s ever not come with key fobs? Also where should I purchase one? Thanks

E53's only came with Diamond style key fobs.

You need to go to the dealer and they will order you one by your VIN.

Plus, if you use the key cylinder too many times it will shatter into pieces, ask me and many, many others here how we know...lol!!

If you only have a key with a light is it possible that you only have a valet key?

I don't know how that's possible but I'd order 2 diamond fobs if you don't have any of them.

No, it wouldn't be a "valet" key if it has a light. The valet key isn't illuminated...it's very identifiable in that it has a gray head vs the black head of all the other style keys.

Not all the keys below may be available for your e53 X5...it depends on it's build date/model year...i8n fact, some of the BMW part nbrs may not be correct...the keys between 9/1999-10/2003 have different part nbrs...so always double check with your local BMW dealerships parts dept for the correct 11 digit BMW part nbr for the keys based on your BMW's VIN:

What is the plastic key for? There is on in my vehicles user manual binder and I have no idea what it is for.

Is there anywhere else to buy the remote key besides the dealer? Dealer here wants $250 for the remote key

The remote keys cost so much because they contain 3 features:
  • EWS immobilizing system that uses a transponder that has an ISN (individual serial number) that is burned intoit at the factory and is unique to you car based on its VIN. That same ISN is burned into your EWS control module and DME/ECU...if the ISN doesn't match in all the EWS components the vehicle won't start.
  • FZV - remote central locking
  • DWA - antitheft alarm siren system

All the other keys also have an EWS transponder in them...again, this is why the dealer is usualy the easiest place to get a key.

There are some places that have people that have invested in equipment that can retrieve your ISN, then burn the iSN into a new transponder chip....but then you have to find a key that has the correct blade and also find a keysmith that can correctly cut the blade to fit your ignition and door lock cylinder.

Try a different dealership. I ordered one from our local and it was ~$180 after tax. Was going to buy 2 but I repaired the battery in the one that came with the truck so have 2 good ones now...
