Smile Ignition Coil R&R

2002 X5 with a couple of bad coils. Anyone have some good directions on the removal and installation of the coils? Also, I have been of the habit with other vehicles to change out the one that is misfiring and not all of them. Any opinions there?

Thanks
Kelly

If it's a 3.0 just remove the covers and disconnect the wiring and pull up lol

It is a 3.0, and I guess it would probably be that simple, but book time was 1 to 1.5 hours I think. I thought surely there must be more to it than that if book time was 1.5 hours - guess not
Recommend change all 6 or just those misfiring?

I'd change all 6 spark plugs.

If you're getting a misfiring coil just change the one that's missing for now, but visually inspect all for damage, etc. Clean the contacts with electrical cleaner and put some dielectric grease on the harness.

Do these coil packs have the mini boot on the bottom that needs replacement at 80-100K? This model year shows two versions of the coil pack.

Starting from the front of the engine count three coils back and that would be cylinder No. 3, cylinder No. 6 is the last cylinder next to the firewall.

When I pull the covers off, there appears to be 2 bolts diagonally offset that holds them in place. Just unbolt them and disconnect the harness? Any trick to the wiring harness?

Thanks!!

Yes. Just remove 2 10mm bolts and disconnect the harness. Then pull it out.
