X5 05 3.0L Diesel - Removing the mufflers for stainless tips

Hi, I was thinking about removing the rear mufflers on my car and changing the exhaust up so that I had twin stainless tips coming out the bumper, and a section of the exhaust also stainless. I've heard that this may cause back pressure issues and may need remapping?.. I've also heard that it won't?.. If so what's involved in remapping and where would u get that done? (and rough price as I've found BMW are ridiculous if u were to get them to do anything.. $690 for a new key.. forget about it) I'm leaning towards leaving it standard now if it's gonna cause issues.. also questioning if I'll like the sound :/ haha.. but love tinkering with my car so I can't help but find myself looking for things to do. Maybe save the cash for some drilled and slotted rotors as that's definately gonna happen.

Backpressure - not an issue. It's a turbo diesel so basically the more free flowing you can make the exhaust, the better.

Remove the rear boxes and I reckon she'll drone like hell and sound crap.

Yeah I'm worried about that. I've got pics where a guy welded up the exit of the muffler and drilled a hole on the other side and attach tips so it comes out the bumper (can't post pics for some reason). Thinking that might be more trouble than it's worth though.

My plan (when I get around to it) is to have the rear boxes removed and two new generic stainless rear cans installed. Single inlet, dual outlet cans are common. Exhaust shop can do all the work, including making up some new hangers to suit the factory mounts.

If you just cut out the rear boxes, it will sound like some bogan hilux in blacktown or melton...

Leave it standard. It will sound rubbish. It won't net you any performance. It will dirty up the rear of your car with diesel soot.

Spend your money on a remap. Will cost the same or less, and will put a much bigger smile on your dial.

Check out BlueFin Superchips or Racechip amongst a host of others.....plug n play and will net you an extra 50hp and 100nm.


Then again, if you've got unavoidable maintenance costs coming up like....brakes (!!)....then do that first.

The crap constantly all over the rear bar would be a pain..
The link I posted to the youtube video sounded alright to me. But each to their own.
I was more doing it for looks than sound. I wouldn't want it to loud and droney but a nice note would be alright under acceleration.
The other option would be a mock tip. Just remove the cover and weld it straight to the standard muffler keeping everything still in place. Pointless and hardly worth the effort though haha.
I had a 65 mustang and diff dumped the pipes but built a bracket to still hold the tips and a section of the exhaust so it still looked standard.. Kinda the same thing

Personally I would be happy with a pair of mock 4.8is tips....but anyway if you go ahead and do it, and it sounds great, and you keep or pick up performance - I'll be the first to tip my hat!
