I use ProClip and the universal Magnetic Mount. That way it doesn't matter what phone I use.
That's a ball shaped mount so you can position it any way you like.

I've tried magnets before and they were terrible for me. Phone always slipped off almost immediately. So annoying.

Best mounts for any device are either ram mount or quad lock. How to mount to the car is the trick but the options are unlimited

Quad lock recently released a wireless charger head which I intend to get. I'm likely to mount onto the top of the shifter

Goes into the cigarette lighter socket.

I like this idea. I HATE the cheap spring loaded junk that is out there.

What is the best thing to mount this onto?

RAM Mounts (RAP-B-138-UN7U) Composite Flat Surface Mount with Universal X-Grip Cell/Iphone Holder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008JH0XH6..._bnq9Db169FWXB

The complete mount looks like this. There are half a dozen different types of base you can mix and match you show only the "head".

The best mounts to phone are the quad lock.

Quad Lock Car Mount https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E3DCUU8..._Jpq9DbSH40Q7P

Here's an example of quad lock suction mount. You can either get a full case or a stick on universal mount for your phone. A 45° twist locks a phone on or off. No wiggles and jiggles.

You can get a ram mount to hold a quad head and get the best of both.

Quad seems discontinued for cars.

Nope still have. A common solution is to screw or glue (3m command release) a smooth disc somewhere you can use the suction cup
