The red tail gate lights are rear fog lights.

Most all the ebay lights have the capability to light up, if your car comes with the rear fogs just plug them in. If your car doesnt come with rear fogs, you can wire them up and plug them in.

^^^ bingo. My LED tails have rear fogs and after wiring them up and doing some coding and purchasing a euro headlight switch they work like factory.

The headlight switch will have two switches for the fog lights, front and rear if you have the rear. If you only have the front fog switch that is self explanatory.

How about the Spyder LEDs? I've heard there are problems with e53 models after '03. Something with the connectors? Can anyone confirm?

^facelift X5's have adaptive tail lights. They dont play well with LED's, but they can work with a few mods like resistors and/or capacitors.

Search the forums, there are a few very informative threads on LED tails here with lots of first hand info from members who put them on.

Capacitors will fix the LED tails on 03-up. I can post a pic of mine later with the rear fogs lit up, the write up is in the long original DIY thread and TerminatorX5 was a big help in finding out the wiring for rear fogs.
