2001 X5 OBD or Ads interface

Hi,

I'm new here on the forum but I'm a mainstay on m3forum. I just recently picked up a 2001 with build date 03/2000. Oxford Green Metallic.

I have a question about the OBD and ADS interface. My X5 comes with the 20pin under the hood and OBD under the dash. I tried using my serial OBD cable that I used for my e46m on the OBD under the dash and it doesn't detect the ignition on INPA, tried using a OBD adapter to 20pin, and still no ignition detection on INPA. Even my PA soft doesn't detect the X5.

Hopefully somebody can give their insights on what's the proper cable to use.

I'm using INPA 5.0.6 and EDIABAS 7.3.0

I also have the ADS 20 pins interface on my x. I have used Carsoft 6.5 and BMW Scanner 1.4 sucessfully with the 20 pins connector.

Haven't setup a computer to work with INPA 5.0.6 and ediabas 7.3.0.

Are you using the interface with P.A. Soft BMW Scanner 1.4? If not that is why you are not able to interface with the modules in the X.

For Carsoft I also used the interface that I used when I had my E34.

Don't think you can just use a 20 pins connector with a serial pin

I have ADS working on my 1998 328i with serial connection on an old Dell laptop. It also has the OBD port, but I could not get that channel to work. I needed to get Dell specific drivers and had to get an ADS cable that worked (my first one did not). I got the good one here: ADS/OBD - Interfaces 4 Beemers. They also have schematics to build your own (I did this while I was waiting for the cable to come in). There is a guy on the BF site if I recall that helped me out with the Dell drivers and the issues I was having initially getting it working. He is from Australia. PM me if you need and I'll dig up his address.

I just tried the 20pin adapter with the PA Soft interface and it works. At first, I only tried the PA Soft interface on the obd connector under the dash. Thanks for this info man.

Looks like it. But that one is just the interface, no 20-pin adapter or housing or cables. The other one I also ordered the ADS/OBD adapter and use that to connect to the X5. I got lazy and set up two laptops - one for the 328, one for the X5. For the 535 I got the Romania package that uses USB and OBD and set up a third.

It turns out that I don't need an ADS interface, I tried my k+dcan cable with 20pin adapter and it works with INPA. I wonder why my serial OBD doesn't work. I will try NCS this weekend.
