For all your transmission issues!
The customer did some research on his own and it turns out, you don't have to use an X5 transmission in an X5. Personally I would not do this but it's his truck and I did what was asked of me. He got a transmission out of a 540 e39. Side by side, they were exactly the same. All except the position of the gear position sensor. Plugs were the same. Harness plugged right in. All I had to do was out the extension drive from his old transmission onto the new one. I was very skeptical of this whole thing but I made it clear to the customer this was all on him. Transmission went in without a hitch. Sure enough, it worked. Perfectly. I was kind of stunned myself. So long story short is this transmission was about $1000 cheaper than an X5 transmission and they are probably very closely related to each other and in fact, will work in an X5. Just thought you guys would like to know. All Transmissions bolted to an M62 will apparently work in an X5. |

Haha technically, that would work as well. Remove front diff. Put on non X5 oil pan. Custom driveshaft. Really not too complicated. Would have to be converted to RWD.

I would venture to say that all transmissions will "work", it's just a matter of for how long. Internally, the transmissions must have different clutch packs, converters and tq ratings.

This guy in Russia installed a 6-speed on a 4.6is:
