Adding SMG/SSG paddles to existing wheel - doable? (Rob_?)

I was just reading Jan's post on the recent M5 wheel thread where he said "...install the E60 M sport wheel and "add" SSG paddles...", and it got me thinking...

I've looked through the wheel articles but none address adding the paddles to the wheel - if that's even possible - don't know. Are the SSG/SMG wheels different, or can the paddles and wiring harness be added to a sport wheel? I suspect they can as I've seen a 2004 X5 sport wheel with SSG paddles offered by a company who sells these wheels. Is this something a fairly good DIYer could do himself? Can just the required parts be bought from the dealer? (Rob_?) Has anyone done this yet? I'd like to add SSG paddles to my new M-Sport wheel...

Hello,

this has actually been done. Check out the following web page
http://home.comcast.net/~paddle.shif...e83_newssg.htm
It shows the retrofit of SSG paddle shift to the new E53 sport wheel
for X5 from 2004 and onwards

Nice find, I really wanna do that for my X3... It's just doesn't fit in the budget at the moment. But good luck to anyone who tries this and make a write-up!

Jan, Rob - thanks & much appreciated. The VS wheel is the one I saw too but he's selling these and understandably not giving out any info on installing the paddles on the wheel, nor installing the wheel in the vehicle (but I think we have that part) unless you buy it from him.

I'm looking for instructions starting from having the steering wheel in one hand, and the paddle shifters in the other hand - putting them together and then installing in the car. I suspect in addition to the shifters and mounting hardware, I'd need the slip ring, and then follow the DIY instructions to install the wheel. Does that sound right? How much would the slip ring go for Rob? Do you guys suspect if I simply purchase the parts, adding them to the wheel would be rather obvious? It certainly doesn't look obvious when looking at the wheel itself. I don't see where the paddles would be mounted...
