Aspherical Side Mirrors

I just installed a pair that I received over the weekend. For some reason, it looks like all of the "euro" mirrors are shipped out of Eastern Europe. Took about 2 1/2 weeks for them to arrive, but I am a very happy camper. I've had these things on all of my BMWs in the past, but nothing needs it more than the X5. Now I can see small, low cars that are next to me and cars 3-4 lanes over!

There are plenty of them for sale on eBay and they come in the auto-dim/heated variety, or whatever your car is optioned for. Don't understand why our cars don't come with these in the US... it is very unsafe to have to turn your head while making a lane change at highway speeds.

With that said, I have a pair of mint US auto-dim/heated side mirrors for sale if anyone needs them!

Congrats...I agree totally with the sentiments of your post....and I too have been replacing my US side mirrors with the optional wide angle/aspherical Euro mirrors over the past decade...and I feel the e53 actually needed them...not just as an option..because the original mirrors just don't offer a good view of what's next to the vehicle. When I first got my X...I was afraid to change lanes in heavy traffic because I was never sure if someone was in the blind spot without craning my neck.

Im sure one of the biggest reason the US DOT won't approve the aspherical mirrors because not having the 1:1 reflective view that US drivers have been used to would freak many of them out...just like most friendsor mechanics that have driven my cars. Only if they new that once they used them on a regular bases...they'd come to know how much better the aspherical mirrors are.

The only time I miss the 1:1 reflective driver's side mirror is when yu drive past that fine young lady on a nice summer day...and you'd like to catch the double-take...the aspherical mirror pushes her reflection too far away.

I have the budget variety on all three of our cars...
Smaller convex disc on driver side, larger disc on pass side.

Not elegant, but the originals are 13+, 12+, and 5+ yrs old, depending on the car, and all work well.

Couple bucks at the auto parts store.

Back in the day when I worked, I used to buy a box of them, and carry a pair in my briefcase for when I had to rent a car, when travelling without the local guy.

Those Michey Diamaris have only seen Hero Snow, that first few light snows in Oct/Nov.

When I lived on our mtn full time/all winter, I ran Style 57 17s with dedicated snows: gripped like a Dall Sheep.

We hide out at our SW FL house in 'winter' these past several winters...

You are in CO: crack open the piggy bank and get some real winter tars; those Diamaris won't work in slick weather below 30 degs F, imo.
